Religion: Any system of beliefs.
There's one definition of religion. Now, isn't it true that the teachers aren't allowed to teach religion? For years we've heard all about evolution, and Charles Darwin, and the Big Bang, and all that junk. And for years we Chrisitans have debated about this, saying that we don't believe it and they're teaching as truth. We say that if they give us evolution they should also give us christianity.
But they do let us pray at the flag pole, and most teachers will tell you that they don't neccessarily believe in evolution. Plus, we're never going to be able to avoid the way of the world. We can and will fight against it, but it will always be there, tormenting us. And I personally think that it's good for us to see and learn about what they think, and to be able to reason out why it's wrong and such.
So maybe, just maybe, evolution in school might be a helpful thing.

I think that one of the biggest dangers that Christian teens and college students face is getting so wrapped up in being upset over the belief systems being taught in the schools (evolution, cults, atheism) that we forget to focus on what WE believe, and on the freedoms that we DO have.
Logan's right - we are allowed to pray at the flag pole, hold prayer meetings and Bible studies, carry our Bibles and read them in public places... The question is, why don't we exercise those rights and priveleges??
I think that we are afraid. I know I was, as a jr. higher and then as a high schooler. I was blessed in that my first year of college was a one year Bible school. For the first time I had no opposition, real or imagined, to living my faith in the open. It felt good! And it also made me feel ashamed - how many times in high school did I leave my Bible on my bedside table because I was embarrassed to carry it with me? How often did I rationalize that decision by telling myself that when kids saw my Bible they would be turned off to the gospel because of the stereotypes propagated by tv and other anti-christian influences, when in fact I was afraid they would label me a religious fanatic and not want to be my friend? How many times did I blow off our lunch Bible study by telling myself that I was a more effective wittness out in the lunch room than closetted in our sponsored classroom, when in reality I was afraid of being laughed at.
Why are we so afraid to be who we are? Why are we ashamed to be labeled as Christ's followers? We are the most blessed of people, and yet we allow the world to tell us what we can and cannot do, simply because we are afraid.
I'm not saying that I always allow my faith to be evident. I try, I really do. But there are definitely still times when I see an oppertunity to share the gospel with someone - to be Jesus' representation in a very dark and lonely world - and I remain silent.
We do not need to be afraid! We are warriors - children of God.
I want to encourage you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, to not let the world tell you who you are. The world will label you, there's no way around that. They will critisize and slam you, doing their very best to demoralize you to the point that you are only living your Christianity in church and in your mind. But you DO NOT have to let them win!
"Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me [Jesus]." ~John 14:1 New American Standard Bible

Yes, we have so many chances to share out faith and to show those people who we really are. But so many times we back down. We think up reasons and excuses why not to, we use the tools that Satan has given us against God, and against ourselves. But we need to use what God and the schools allow us to do. We have many tools for good, just not all of us have the will.
And you're right. We focus far too much on the bad. Why work so hard to end the teachings that we disagree with, when we can teach what we know is truth. The bible is perfect and holy, if the people know about it, we will have no need to end the truthless teachings.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword . . . Hebrews 4:12 - ESV
